PHIL GEORGEFF'S ILLINOIS FESTIVAL OF RACING
The annual Phil Georgeff Illinois Festival of Racing takes place Saturday. This series of races, for Illinois-bred, foaled, conceived and/or registered, is always one of the highlights of our fall meet. The four races -- the Lightning Jet, for three and up at six furlongs; the Powerless, for fillies and mares, three and up, at six furlongs; the Illinois Coronet, for three and up at a mile and a sixteenth, and the Illini Princess, for fillies and mares, three and up, at a mile and a sixteenth -- will go as the fourth through the seventh races on the card. Phil Georgeff, among others, will be doing the trophy presentations.
BEHIND THE SCENES
The second installment of Hawthorne's popular "Behind The Scenes" series takes place Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the first floor grandstand. This week's guests include Phil Georgeff and jockey Shane Laviolette. Free coffee and rolls will be served.
Saturday will also feature the second qualifier for Hawthorne's handicapping contest. It takes two winners to qualify. Weekly prizes include televisions, copies of Hawthorne Trainer Stats, by M. Scott McMannis, and subscriptions to the Horseplayer Magazine. The finals for November will be held November 24th. Prizes include Hawthorne betting vouchers and dinners in the Gold Cup Room.
RANDY MEIER RIDING DOUBLE
Jockey Randy Meier scored with two on Friday. He started off the day with a wire-to-wire victory on the turf aboard Cozzies Valay Girl ($12.60) in the first and another wire-to-wire win, on the main track, aboard You're A Hero ($5.00) in the ninth.
APPRENTICE VILLAFAN WINS TWO
Apprentice rider Roberto Villafan won two on Friday. He took the fourth with Fortunate Pass ($22.20) and the last with Why Not ($26.00).
