Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap Nominations
STICKNEY, IL -- Nominations closed on Wednesday, October 24 for the 19th running of the Grade 3 Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap, to be contested on Saturday, November 3rd. This race, at a mile on the turf, for 3-year-olds and up, carries a purse of $150,000 Guaranteed. Pending late mail, 24 nominations have been received.
Heading the field is Golden Racing Stables Where's Taylor, seeking his second Carey in a row. Where's Taylor, utilizing his good turn of early foot, wired the field last year. In his most recent race Where's Taylor finished a good second to Hap in Keeneland's $500,000 Grade 2 Shadwell on October 7th at this one mile distance. Where's Taylor carried 126 pounds in that race.
Dernier Croise, last years Carey runner up, is also nominated for this race. Dernier Croise, owned by Richard C. Colton Jr., utilized a good late move to gain second place in that race but was unable to catch Where's Taylor who had been left alone on an uncontested lead. The probability of a more hotly-contested pace in this race could enhance Dernier Croise's chances.
Another intriguing possibility for this race is I. O. U. Atonn Stables Beckon The King. This gelded son of Ghazi was dismissed at over odds of over 14-1 in his most recent start, the $100,000 John Henry at the Meadowlands, but he closed with a rush to win at this same distance and set a new track record in the process.
