ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 17, 2001) -- Thomas Orr's Tub Tosser found room along the rail and got up in the waning yards to annex the $54,000 Joe Marovich Stakes by a neck before a crowd of 26,153 Sunday at Arlington Park. Eddie Martin Jr. rode the Robert Holthus-trained son of Proper Reality who covered the seven furlongs over a fast track in 1:23.29.

The Joe Marovich Stakes honored the memory of beloved Illinois Thoroughbred owner and lifelong Chicago native Joe Marovich who died suddenly last September.

The win was the third in 10 starts and the first in stakes competition for Tub Tosser who earned $32,400 to boost his bankroll to $100,600.

Hickory Switch, the 6-5 post time favorite, made the pace for the first half mile, reaching that juncture in 45.42 seconds after running a quarter mile in 22.36 seconds, before fading to last in the eighth-horse field.

Antsinmypants, who chased Hickory Switch in the early going, took the lead nearing the top of the stretch and held a head advantage with an eighth of a mile to run in the race. Winnie's Pooh Bear, closing widest of all, grabbed the lead inside the final furlong but could not hold off the charge of the winner.

Tub Tosser raced in last for the first half mile and began to make a steady gain along the rail around the turn and into the stretch, finding a small hole to navigate and gain the victory.

"Mr. Holthus told me 'This horse has absolutely no speed. Just break and let him settle,'" Martin said. "At the half, he started to run a little bit and at the three-eighths, I had so much horse. I had two cracks I had to go through but I wasn't scared -- I've been over the rail before. This horse ran an excellent race. Fifty yards out I could tell I was going to catch (Winnie's Pooh Bear)."

It was another half a length back to Spectacular Cat. Brassy Babe, Don Regino, Purplest, Antsinmypants and Hickory Switch completed the order of finish.

Tub Tosser paid $26.20, $9.60 and $7.80. Winnie's Pooh Bear paid $6.80 and $4.60. Spectacular Cat paid $5.00.
