LANGSTON PREVAILS IN BOWL GAME
Catalano Takes Lead in Tight Trainers' Race
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Oct. 21, 2001) -- Frank C. Calabrese's Langston stalked the pace of graded stakes winner Minor Wisdom, overtook that rival mid-stretch and went on to capture the $55,000 Bowl Game Stakes by 2½ lengths Sunday at Arlington Park. Hall-of-Fame jockey Earlie Fires was aboard the son of Pine Bluff, who covered the mile and a sixteenth over "good" turf in 1:44.44.
"I thought we might be on the lead, but the other horse took it," said Fires. "Speed hasn't been holding unless you make it easy. This horse was probably better than the other horse anyway."
The win was the second of the day for trainer Wayne Catalano and gave the defending training titlist a one-win lead over Jerry Hollendorfer in the standings, 37-36.
Langston earned $33,000 for the victory, his seventh in 13 trips to the post, to boost his bankroll to $239,143.
Jake the Flake made a late rally to nail Minor Wisdom for the place spot. Mister Volare, Reno Rumble, Summerzzene, Orleans Road, Prime Meridian and Who Devil Who completed the order of finish.
Langston, the 3-2 post time favorite, paid $5.00, $3.00 and $2.60. Jake the Flake returned $3.80 and $3.00. Minor Wisdom paid $2.80.
