Weekend Stakes Sweep for Jockey Randall Meier

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sept. 30, 2001) -- Frank C. Calabrese's Meadowminer returned from a 10-month layoff to pick up his fourth win in as many trips to the post when he captured the $53,000 Sauce Boat Stakes for 3-year-olds by 1 lengths Sunday at Arlington Park. The Wayne Catalano-trained Meadowlake colt led every step of the way and covered the 6 furlongs in 1:16.37.

The win completed a weekend stakes sweep for jockey Randall Meier, who was astride Arlington-Washington Futurity hero Publication on Saturday.

"He set a legitimate pace but was doing it so easy and in hand," said Meier of Meadowminer who posted fractions of :22.35, :45.58 and 1:09.95. "He was relaxed and I let the rest of the field come to him at the top of the stretch because I knew he'd respond like he did the last time I rode him (Nov. 4, 2000 at Hawthorne). He was striding out very nice at the end. 'Cat' (trainer Wayne Catalano) said he had this horse fit, and he's so good at getting horses ready."

The winner earned $31,800 to boost his bankroll to $96,600.

Michigan invader Winnie's Pooh Bear was second, three lengths to the good of Ballado's Devil who finished third, followed by 6-5 favorite Bet On Joe, Don Regino and One Special Judge.

Second choice in the wagering, Meadowminer paid $8.20, $5.40 and $3.00. Winnie's Pooh Bear returned $4.60 and $2.60. Ballado's Devil paid $3.80.
