ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sept. 23, 2001) -- Emerald Ridge Farm's Something Wicked took the lead in mid-stretch and was all out to hold off the late challenge of Magic Motel to win the $45,000 Unique Type Handicap by a head Sunday at Arlington Park. Shane Laviolette was aboard the daughter of Chimes Band, who covered the "about" a mile and one-sixteenth over a "sloppy" track in 1:50.30.

The win was the second straight for the Christine Janks-trained 4-year-old who earned $27,000 to boost her bankroll to $150,000 from a record of four wins in 15 starts.

Magic Motel, trained by Harvey Vanier and ridden by Chris Emigh, rallied furiously down the center of the track in the stretch and was unable to get to the winner but was clearly second best in the field of nine Illinois-bred distaffers. Ballado's Baby was third, followed home by Lorraine, Royal Bandita, Faccia Bella, Little Mo, Prairie Spring and Erin G.

Prairie Spring, who broke from the outside stall, managed to get the lead in the first turn and led the field through fractions of 24.30 seconds for the quarter mile, a half-mile in 48.28 seconds and a three-quarter mile split of 1:13.56 before fading to the back of the pack.

Something Wicked raced in the middle of the pack early, rallied along the inside to assume command in the lane and maintained lead while under strong handling from Laviolette. The 3-1 favorite, Something Wicked paid $8.20, $3.80 and $3.00. Magic Motel returned $5.00 and $4.00. Ballado's Baby paid $5.60.
