ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (September 3, 2001) -- Intern, owned and trained by Louie Roussel III, overtook Illinois-bred Minor Wisdom in deep stretch en route to a neck victory in the $121,300 Sea O'Erin Breeders' Cup Mile Labor Day at Arlington Park. Eddie Martin Jr. rode the son of Dynaformer who covered the mile over firm turf in 1:35.76.

Kris's Sleigh, also trained by Roussel and ridden by Randall Meier, set the pace covering the first seven furlongs in 1:22.36 after posting a quarter-mile fraction of 23.41, a half-mile split of 46.37 and a speedy three-quarters of a mile in 1:10.59.

Minor Wisdom, well placed early in second, took the lead inside the eighth pole but was unable to hold off the five-wide rally of the eventual winner.

"Everything worked out perfectly," Martin said. "Louie's other horse (Kris's Sleigh) was out there cutting nice fractions and that set it up perfectly for my horse. I wanted to come though on the fence but I was having a little difficulty with the horse lugging in, so I coaxed him into going around and once he got clear, he was on his way."

The win, worth $72,780, was the first stakes victory for Roussel since 1999.

"I got to give him a breather although there was a lot of speed in there," said Minor Wisdom's jockey Frank Lovato Jr. "He ran a winning race. He just got beat by a better horse today."

It was another length and a quarter back to Langston, who finished third in the 12-horse field. Three Wonders, Galic Boy, Mister Volare, Kris's Sleigh, Apt to Be, Orleans Road, American Spirit, Ask the Lord and Soccer George completed the order of finish.

The third choice in the wagering, Intern paid $13.20, $6.80 and $5.60. Minor Wisdom paid $27.20 and $15.60. Langston paid $4.60.

The Sea O'Erin was the first leg of America's Pick-4, a $1 wager with a $250,000 guaranteed pool linking Arlington's headliner with the $200,000 Miller Genuine Draft Cradle Stakes from River Downs, the Grade II $500,000 Diana Handicap from Saratoga and the $150,000-added Miami Mile Breeders' Cup Handicap from Calder Race Course. The winning combination of 5-3-4-1 was worth $1,955.90.
