ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 10, 2001) -- Jacks or Better Farm's Monsieur Cat, second in the Grade II American Derby here last month, withstood a stretch-long battle with Rahy's Secret to capture the Awad Stakes by a neck Friday at Arlington Park. Craig Perret was astride the son of Tabasco Cat who covered the "about" one mile and one-sixteenth in 1:45.23 over a course listed as yielding following a Thursday night rainstorm.

The winner, trained by Dale Romans, earned $38,400 from the $64,000 purse to push his bankroll to $155,670 from a record of four victories in 12 starts.

"This horse ran a good race last time," said Perret, "and we were trying to get (him) into the Secretariat (Stakes, August 18). He's finally starting to get the message. Now, every time you throw something new at him, he can handle it. Before, he was just beating himself. We're just trying to get him to perform at his best. Now, he's starting to do it. He's going to make you beat him."

Monsieur Cat broke alertly and took the lead shortly after a quarter-mile had been run. He was engaged by Rahy's Secret at the top of the stretch and was all out to hold off that rival.

Altered Birdie finished third, followed by Bahroba, Wudantunoit, Lil Mephistopheles, Heptagone and Miesque's Encore.

Monsieur Cat, the 8-5 post time favorite, paid $5.20, $3.00 and $2.60. Rahy's Secret paid $3.60 and $2.80. Altered Birdie returned $4.00
