ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 4, 2001) -- Guy & Diane Snowden's Sluice rallied from well off the pace to post a three-length victory in the $64,000 Misty Isle Stakes Saturday at Arlington Park. Rene Douglas rode the Bill Mott-trained daughter of Seeking The Gold who covered the 1 1/16 miles over firm turf in 1:42.68.

The score was the third in 11 starts for Sluice and the winner's share of $38,400 boosted her lifetime bankroll past the $100,000 mark to $107,663.

Favored La Recherche set the pace in the race posting fractions of 24.41 seconds for the opening quarter mile, 48.21 seconds for the half-mile and a three-quarter mile split of 1:12.61 before fading in the stretch.

With about a quarter of a mile to run, Twilite Tryst, under jockey Chris Emigh, moved to the front but was unable to hold off the late charge of the eventual winner, who was fifth through the first half of mile of the race.

"It was perfect," said Douglas, who was riding the filly for the first time. "I had never ridden this filly before so I had to ride her the way the race came up. I chose to stay behind the speed and save ground. I took her back and it worked. I saved two or three lengths right there along the rail. After that, when it came to move, she did everything I asked."

Twilite Twist held on to finish second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Sheikh Away. La Recherche, Peace Keeping, Ballado's Baby and Mocha Miss completed the order of finish.

Sent off as the second choice in the seven-horse field, Sluice paid $6.40, $3.60 and $3.80 (prices ok). Twilite Tryst paid $4.60 and $3.60. Sheikh Away returned $4.40.
