ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 3, 2001) -- Fred Kissling's Spanish Glitter rallied from from just off the pace to capture the $63,250 Meafara Stakes by 4 lengths Friday at Arlington Park. Rene Douglas rode the Bernard Flint-trained daughter of Glitterman who covered the six furlongs in a swift 1:10.87.

Longshots For Elise and Hazino battled for the early lead with the fomer taking the field of six 3-year-old fillies through fractions of 22.87 seconds for the quarter mile, 46.41 seconds for the half mile and a five-furlong split of 58.67 before being over taken by the eventual winner inside the final eighth of a mile.

The win was the fourth this year and fifth overall for Spanish Glitter who earned $37,950 to boost her career bankroll to $218,580.

"I knew there were two or three other speed horses," Douglas said, "but I saw that three races back she was able to sit off the lead and win. I let those two horses go out in front of me and it worked out. She has a good quarter-mile kick and she gave it to me when I asked for it."

For Elise held the second spot, finishing a half-length ahead of Hazino. Boogs Eyes, Sams Tune and Gold Huntress completed the order of finish.

Sent off as the 6-5 favorite, Spanish Glitter paid $4.40, $2.80 and $3.00 (ok). For Elise returned $6.00 and $3.60. Hazino paid $5.20.
