ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (July 28, 2001) -- For the second straight year, there was an Illinois-bred mare in the winner's circle following the Grade III Modesty Handicap at Arlington Park.

Team Block's Ioya Two, an Illinois-foaled daughter of Lord At War, took the lead on the backstretch and was all out to hold off the late rally of Megans Bluff and win by a nose, covering the mile and three-sixteenths over "good" turf in 1:55.47. Last year's Modesty was won by Wade For Me, who went on to be named champion Illinois older female.

"She broke real good," said winning rider Mark Guidry. "I wanted to get her covered up. The 10-horse (Jig) came across and I thought I'd get to sit behind her but that didn't happen. She saw a little daylight, tugged me through there and she made the lead up the backside but she was doing it real easily. I let her run where she wanted to. Turning for home, she switched leads and she dug in hard. Inside the sixteenth (pole), she really had to dig deep, which she did and that makes her a true champion."

The Modesty is part of the troika of stakes that comprise Arlington's inaugural Million Preview Day program and serves as the last local prep for the Grade I $700,000 Beverly D. Stakes which will be run August 18. Ioya Two is not nominated for the Beverly D. and would have to be supplemented for $21,000.

"I doubt (that he will supplement for the Beverly D.)," Block said. "That's a whole different group of fillies coming in here for that. We just focused on today."

It was the first graded stakes win for both Ioya Two and trainer Chris Block. The winner's check of $90,000 pushed her earnings past the $300,000 mark to $338,384 from a record of nine wins from 24 starts.

Megans Bluff broke a beat slowly but rallied late to just miss getting up for the win, a half-length to the good of Solvig. Histoire Sainte, Polaire, Badouizm, Jig, Lady Angharad, Lady Tamworth, Sassy Sabrina and Abita completed the order of finish.

Ioya Two paid $16.40, $7.40 and $4.20. Megans Bluff returned $4.80 and $3.00. Solvig paid $3.00.
