SHE'S A DEVIL DUE UP JUST IN TIME TO WIN TOP FLIGHT STAKES
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. --- Brian Griggs & Mike Goetz' She's A Devil Due got up in the final stride to beat 35-1 longshot Dare She Goes by a nose in the $75,000 Top Flight Stakes Saturday at Arlington International Racecourse. The Top Flight Stakes is the final local prep for the Grade 3 $100,000 Arlington-Washington Lassie which will be run September 30.
She's a Devil Due raced in last for the first half mile of the six-furlong stakes while Awe That, who overcame a stumble at the start and was hustled to the front, led through a quarter mile in 22.60 seconds.
At the top of the stretch, Awe That paid the price for her early miscue and started to fade, leaving 13-10 favorite Dixie Kitten on the lead. She was soon overtaken by Dare She Goes who led by some two lengths inside the eighth pole but was unable to hold off the charge of She's a Devil Due who prevailed on the wire, stopping the timer in 1:11.35.
She's a Devil Due, remained unbeaten in three starts, earning $45,000 for the victory to boost her bankroll to $88,200.
"She dug in and was doing what she had to do," said winning jockey Mark Guidry. "It was just a question of if we or the wire was going to get there first and we got lucky. Three-quarters (of a mile) isn't really going to be her cup of tea. At a mile or a mile and an eighth and she'll do a lot better"
"My filly ran a great race," said Chris Emigh, who was astride the runner-up. "She just got caught in that last jump."
Favored Dixie Kitten finished third after taking a short lead at the eighth pole.
"She took a bad step when she went to switch leads and never made up for all that," said jockey Anthony Lovato, who made the trip up from Louisiana to guide the 13-10 chalk.
Scoop, Star Engagement, Awe That and Foryoumylove completed the order of finish.
She's a Devil Due paid $5.20, $3.60 and $2.60. Dare She Goes paid $16.40 and $4.80. Dixie Kitten paid $2.80.
