(847) 385-7500 ext. 7319 GRADE I BEVERLY D. GETS 91 NOMINATIONS WITH RICHEST $700,000 PURSE ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 30, 2001) -- Perfect Sting, voted an Eclipse Award as Female Turf Horse in 2000 after winning the Grade I Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and five of six starts during the season, tops a group of 91 fillies and mares nominated to the 12th running of the Grade I Beverly D. With a total purse increased to $700,000, the co-featured attraction of the International Festival of Racing will enjoy its richest renewal August 18 as one of Illinois' three Grade I races presented that day. Also contested that afternoon will be the Arlington Million and the Secretariat Stakes. The Beverly D., restricted to distaffers 3-years-old and upward, is run at a mile and three- sixteenths over the Arlington grass course. Three of the last six Beverly D. winners - Flawlessly in 1993, Hatoof in 1994, and Possibly Perfect in 1995 - have gone on to win divisional honors as female turf horse during their respective seasons. Perfect Sting, who has made one start this year, won Hialeah's Grade II Black Helen Handicap by two lengths on April 14 in an impressive performance as the odds-on choice of the fans. A pair of Grade II tallies in Saratoga's Diana Handicap on Labor Day and Belmont's New York Handicap in mid-July were other highlights in 2000. Beverly D. nominee Happyanunoit won her seasonal bow May 26 in the Grade I Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park, coming from just off the pace to catch favored Tranquility Lake in the final strides. Happyanunoit missed by a length when finishing second in last year's Beverly D. as the odds-on choice of the fans after having won Hollywood's Grade I Beverly Hills Handicap in her previous trip to the post. Tranquility Lake, winner of last fall's Grade I Yellow Ribbon at Santa Anita and another Beverly D. nominee, returned to her winning ways in the Grade III Wilshire Handicap at Hollywood Park April 29, leading every step of the way as the even-money choice. She had clear command in mid-stretch during the Gamely, but just failed to withstand Happyanunoit late. Also among the 2001 Beverly D. nominees based on the West Coast is Tout Charmant, who edged Tranquility Lake by a head when they were co-favored in the wagering last November 26 in the Grade I Matriarch at Hollywood. A pair of East Coast rivals among the 2001 Beverly D. nominations are Gaviola and Spook Express. The South African-bred Spook Express defeated Gaviola in the latter's seasonal bow in the Grade III Suwannee River Handicap at Gulfstream February 18, but Gaviola returned to win Aqueduct's Grade III Beaugay Handicap May 6 while Spook Express finished third behind Perfect Sting in the Black Helen. Local heroine Megans Bluff, winner of both the Grade III Arlington Oaks and the Grade III Arlington Matron last summer, is a nominee to the Beverly D. this year. The daughter of Pine Bluff won the Grade III Early Times Mint Julep Handicap at Churchill Downs May 19 in her last trip to the post. Other top nominees to this summer's Beverly D. include the Chilean-bred Printemps, winner of the Grade II Hawthorne Handicap at Hollywood Park May 6, and the British-bred Iftiraas, who captured the Grade III Citgo Distaff Turf Mile Stakes at Churchill Downs a day earlier. Also noteworthy locally on the 2001 Beverly D. nominations list is License Fee, who tallied in the Grade III Gallorette Handicap at Pimlico May 18 and the Grade III Sixty Sails Handicap at Sportsman's Park April 29. Arlington Park, the Chicago area's premier Thoroughbred racetrack located in
Arlington Heights, Ill., will run its 102-day live racing meet from June 13
through October 28, 2001. Arlington Park, which merged with Churchill Downs
