ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Oct. 17, 2001) -- Illinois State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, together with Arlington Park, will kick-off the United States Marine Corps Toys For Tots collection campaign at the Arlington on October 20 and 21, 2001 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. Topinka will be at the track on Sunday, Oct. 21.

Any individual who brings a new toy to donate to the Toys for Tots program will receive FREE admission to the Arlington Park for the day.

"This is truly a great opportunity to 'Give From the Heart' by donating toys to needy children throughout Illinois," said Topinka.

"We look forward to the opportunity to participate in this year's Toys For Tots annual drive," said Arlington President Steve Sexton. "It's a chance for us to expand upon our tradition of involvement in the community for a great cause. Helping needy families during the holidays supports our philosophy of being a family-oriented entertainment venue."

According to Topinka and the Marines, this marks the 52nd year of the Toys for Tots program in Illinois (it first began in Los Angeles 53 years ago). Last year, over 500,000 toys were collected and distributed in the Chicagoland area.

"While I think we were able to help many children across the area last holiday season, I know that Illinoisans are very caring people and I encourage each and every one of them to get involved by giving from the heart," Topinka said.

The weekend of October 20 and 21, 2001 marks the kick-off of the 2001 Toys for Tots Program in the Chicago area. Large Toys for Tots containers will be placed at both the clubhouse and grandstand entrances to the racetrack for easy gift drop-off. Arlington Park is located at Euclid and Wilke Road in Arlington Heights.

"It is never too early to start collecting for the holiday season. I think we owe it to the kids to make this one of the best ever," Topinka said. "Since the need for toys is so great, we are very thankful to Arlington Park for participating in the Toys for Tots Campaign, and making the racetrack a hub for citizens to drop off their toy donations."

Toys do not have to be wrapped; however, they must be new. For further information, please contact the Treasurer's Office at (312) 814-1700.
