A CHANCE TO WIN $100,000, BRING BACK THE '50s, BREEDERS' CUP HIGHLIGHT FALL PROMOTIONS AT ARLINGTON PARK
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sept. 23, 2001) -- The third annual Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship, Columbus Day "Bring Back the '50s," and the 2001 Breeders' Cup highlight the schedule of Arlington Park events during the last five weeks of the meet that concludes on Sunday, Oct. 28. In addition, two international races from the World Series Racing Championship are on the schedule for October.
The DRF/NTRA contest -- with its all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas, $100,000 grand prize and national recognition as NTRA/Daily Racing Form Handicapper of the Year at the Eclipse Awards in Hollywood, Fla. -- returns to Arlington Park and its five Trackside OTBs on four consecutive Saturdays -- Sept. 29, Oct. 6, 13 and 20. Arlington Park, combined with Trackside Arlington Park plus the other four off-track facilities will be the five host sites for the four preliminary rounds of the contest, leading up to the Arlington Finals at Trackside Arlington Park on Saturday, Nov. 10.
Preliminary winners, who are eligible for weekly prizes at each site, will compete in the finals at Trackside Arlington Park on Nov. 10 to determine the four lucky winners who will win all-expense paid trips to Las Vegas to compete for the $100,000 first prize against top qualifying handicappers from across the country. The quartet also will compete as Team Arlington in the team competition.
Great international racing is on tap with the $1.5 Canadian International from Woodbine on Sunday, Sept. 30 and the $1.4 million Arc de Triomphe, plus four other stakes races, from Longchamp in France on Sunday, Oct. 7. On "Arc" day, Arlington will host a special Breakfast at Arlington from 7:30 to 10 a.m. with post time for the first race at 8 a.m.. Admission to the track is free, and the breakfast buffet at east end of the apron level near the Hearth Bar, featuring French Toast and croissants as well as eggs, bacon, sausage and assorted pastries, costs $3.95. Post time for the Arc is 10:30 a.m.
Arlington Park will go retroactive on Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 8 with "Bring Back the '50s" day at the racetrack. Prices for admission and the Daily Racing Guide will be rolled back to $1 with food and beverage specials, including hot dogs, soft drinks, popcorn and novelty ice cream, only 50 cents. Radio personality Dick Biondi from Oldies 104.3 will be joined by the PT Cruiser Crew at Arlington from noon to 2 p.m. There will be with other musical entertainment around the track throughout the day.
Anyone signing up for the Twin Spires Club before Oct. 1, will get a coupon in their monthly club newsletter good for a free (Calder Race Course) Festival of the Sun T-shirt.
Racing fans can get a jump on picking the winners for racing's championship day at Arlington's special Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships Handicapping seminar, hosted by local handicapping experts, on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Trackside Arlington Park. Each of the eight Breeders' Cup races will be analyzed by the experts, and will include replays of important prep races.
Then come to Arlington Park on Breeders' Cup Day, Saturday, Oct. 27, for live racing action starting at 10 a.m. followed by all eight World Thoroughbred Championship races from Belmont Park in New York beginning at 12:20 p.m. The first 3,000 fans will receive a special edition souvenir glass from the 2001 Breeders' Cup.
The season ends with a "thank you" from the management of Arlington Park with free admission for all on Fan Appreciation Day, Sunday, Oct. 28.
