CHURCHILL DOWNS INCORPORATED CLOSES RACETRACKS AND OFF-TRACK BETTING FACILITIES SEPT. 11 AND 12, 2001
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 11, 2001) -- Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN) ("CDI") today suspended live racing and simulcast wagering at all its racetracks and off-track betting facilities ("OTB") at noon EDT. Additionally, all CDI live racing and simulcast-wagering operations will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 12. A decision will be made by noon EDT on Wednesday, Sept. 12, concerning when CDI facilities will resume normal operations.
CDI President and Chief Executive Officer Thomas H. Meeker said the Company was suspending operations in light of today's tragic events.
"Churchill Downs Incorporated and its employees are deeply saddened by today's events, and we believe that it is in the best interests of our patrons, vendors and employees to close our live racing and simulcast wagering operations today and tomorrow," said Meeker. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."
Normal training hours will continue at all CDI-owned racetracks and training facilities. All employees and horsemen should enter through designated security entrances and will be required to present a photo I.D. before gaining admittance to the facility.
The Kentucky Derby Museum, adjacent to Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Ky., will also be closed Sept. 11 and 12.
Simulcast wagering will be suspended Sept. 11 and 12 at the following CDI-owned facilities:

Live racing will be suspended on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Ill.
Patrons and interested parties are encouraged to contact their local facility or its respective Web site for more information on hours of operation for Thursday, Sept. 13.
Normal business hours for CDI employees will resume on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Visitors conducting business at CDI facilities must enter the respective racetrack or OTB at the facility's main security entrance.
