HOPEFUL STAKES KICKS OFF BESSEMER TRUST TWO-YEAR-OLD CHALLENGE ON CNBC

$150,000 Grade II Arlington-Washington Futurity Slated for September 29

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Aug. 30, 2001) -- Saturday's 97th running of the Hopeful Stakes from Saratoga Race Course will mark the beginning of the Bessemer Trust 2-Year-Old Challenge, a series of races for 2-year-old colts and geldings from top tracks across the country to be televised by CNBC. The Challenge carries a potential bonus of $1.3 million and leads up to the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile, part of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships to be run at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. on October 27 and to be televised live by NBC.

The series visits Arlington Park on Saturday, Sept. 29 for the $150,000 Grade II Arlington-Washington Futurity with the tape delay broadcast scheduled for 7 - 8 p.m. that evening on CNBC. Historically, a major testing ground for the country's top 2-year old males and a prime developer of future stars and champions, previous winners of the Arlington-Washington Futurity include Horse-of-the-Year winners Buckpasser (1965) and Spend a Buck (1984), who captured those honors as 3-year-olds, a year after their Arlington wins.

Bessemer Trust, a unique wealth management and investment advisory firm, is the title sponsor of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Division, which encompasses the 2-Year Old Challenge series of races on the "Road to the World Thoroughbred Championships," the NTRA's new branding of major races leading up to the Breeders' Cup.

The Bessemer Trust 2-Year-Old Challenge will award $250,000 to the owner of any horse who wins one of the series' seven designated races plus the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile. If the horse has been sold at public auction, the consignor is eligible to receive a $50,000 bonus. If that same horse goes on to win the Kentucky Derby the following year, the owner will earn an additional $1 million bonus.

The complete series schedule is as follows:
